How Are Stretch Marks Formed?

Within the second layer of the skin (the dermis layer), there are two fibres that are interwoven and attached to the skin. These fibres are collagen and elastin and are responsible for providing the skins elasticity and firmness.

When skin is stretched beyond its limits, these fibres are torn. At this point the skin is no longer able to revert to its original position and you are left with stretch marks.
